Venezuela
was one of the three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran
Colombia in 1830 (the others being Colombia and Ecuador). For most of
the first half of the 20th century, Venezuela was ruled by generally
benevolent military strongmen, who promoted the oil industry and
allowed for some social reforms. Democratically-elected governments
have held sway since 1959. Current concerns include: an embattled
president who is losing his once solid support among Venezuelans, a
divided military, drug-related conflicts along the Colombian border,
increasing internal drug consumption, over dependence on the petroleum
industry with its price fluctuations, and irresponsible mining
operations that are endangering the rain forest and indigenous
peoples.

We had the opportunity of meeting Coronel
Castellanos, who is in charge of Maracay Air force during our first visit to Venezuela.
When we shared our desire about coming back and ministering again to the refugee camps, he told us that the only way we could enter openly was through a Sport-Cultural activity instead as religious workers. Then we organized a soccer game as a strategy.

¡We prayed for the Military!
We had different children activities during the morning at the different refugee camps. We played with them and shared God’s love. At night we had Christian music concerts and we preached the Gospel. People were receptive and very open to the message of salvation. |
